Starting this summer, Muziek voor Kinderen is supporting a new project at Africa Music School in Kampala (Uganda): violin lessons at AMS’s main location in Massaja.

Until now, Africa Music School—a music school that focuses on vulnerable children in the community—has primarily offered lessons on brass instruments. It had long been the wish of Francis Kalema, founder of AMS, to add string instruments to the curriculum.

The foundation for this was laid last year, when Petra and Michiel brought 10 violins of various sizes and a cello with them on their visit to Uganda.
In the meantime, a very good teacher has been found: Ritah Aool, a talented young violinist who is studying at the Africa Institute of Music.

Starting in August, Ritah will give weekly lessons to a group of six children. She will be assisted by Jane, who is already somewhat advanced on the violin and who lives at the Africa Music School location permanently. On the days when Ritah isn’t teaching, the children at Africa Music School can practice under Jane’s guidance. And Jane herself takes violin lessons from Ritah. We’re really curious to see how this project will develop!
